This beautiful fort built with yellow sand stone, stands tall overlooking the new town and is visible from quite far. It's a living fort as a lot of people were giving land and buildings to stay within the fort's ramparts. It give this one a unique charm compared to the other forts in Rajasthan. The main fort museum is comparatively small but the fun lies in exploring the small lanes and interacting with the locals and shopkeepers. There are good guest houses within the fort where you can stay. On a clear evening, during sun set the fort changes colour and shimmer like gold. So stay around sunset and take in the view from a nearby rooftop restaurant.

जैसलमेर दुर्ग स्थापत्य कला की दृष्टि से उच्चकोटि की विशुद्ध स्थानीय दुर्ग रचना है। ये दुर्ग २५० फीट तिकोनाकार पहाडी पर स्थित है। इस पहाडी की लंबाई १५० फीट व चौडाई ७५० फीट है। रावल जैसल ने अपनी स्वतंत्र राजधानी स्थापित की थी। स्थानीय स्रोतों के अनुसार इस दुर्ग का निर्माण ११५६ ई. में प्रारंभ हुआ था। परंतु समकालीन साक्ष्यों के अध्ययन से पता चलता है कि इसका निर्माण कार्य ११७८ ई. के लगभग प्रारंभ हुआ था। ५ वर्ष के अल्प निर्माण कार्य के उपरांत रावल जैसल की मृत्यु हो गयी, इसके द्वारा प्रारंभ कराए गए निमार्ण कार्य को उसके उत्तराधिकारी शालीवाहन द्वारा जारी रखकर दुर्ग को मूर्त रूप दिया गया। रावल जैसल व शालीवाहन द्वारा कराए गए कार्यो का कोई अभिलेखीय साक्ष्य नहीं मिलता है। मात्र ख्यातों व तवारीखों से वर्णन मिलता है
