Cardboard Cathedral, Christchurch

4.1
#1 of 19 in Historic Sites in Christchurch
Constructed in just 11 months, Cardboard Cathedral was built as a temporary structure to replace the Anglican Cathedral of Christchurch. The original church sustained major damage in the earthquake of February 2011, leaving worshipers bereft. In response, "disaster architect" Shigeru Ban designed this transitional church pro bono, constructing it from cardboard tubes, timber, steel, and shipping containers. Enter this unusual house of worship to appreciate its simple beauty and ingenious design. Staff and volunteers are on hand to explain more about the church and its significance to the city's population.
