Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. We paid 53 NZD for 40 minutes walking and seeing things we did not come for. At the end 5 minutes in a boat to see a few worms. No foto's allowed during the tour. Maybe we should have done the 2 hour ... more »

A magnificent spectacle that nature offers in the bowels of the Earth in a labyrinth of incredible caves that astonish with their curious complement of worms that emit a bright blue light that seek to attract their prey. Very didactic explanation of the Guide and the best for the end, the route by boat in total darkness and silence. Not let you take pictures in the interior of the cave.View original

The temperature in the glow worm caves is very constant throughout the year at around 14 degrees C. The tour was presented by a very kind, old lady who claimed to be related to the person that discovered the cave. She was able to provide a lot of interesting information about the history of the limestone cave and how it has been formed over the years. All kind of fascinating limestone formations are shown while already some glow worms could be observed. Then a large population of glow worms were closely observed just below a rock formation. When the light is switched on, you can clearly see a kind of web that the worm created in order to catch some food. At the end of the tour the boat tour started. Allthough short (5 minutes) this was the absolute highlight of the tour because a lot of glow worms could be observed in the dark and without any noise. Unfortunately in the tour we'd booked, no photo's were allowed, even not without the use of flash, for economical reasons. So in the end we have had a great tour which we will never forget. It would have been nice if we could have shared this with our family with some pictures.

Great and easy way to experience the caves....we’ll guided paths, easy walk (a few stairs to navigate) and a very relaxing boat ride to see the glowworms and exit the caves. Tour guides are all related to the first discoverer of the caves and the commentary is nicely balanced between humour and fact. All in all a good experience - Adrenalin junkies may want to consider other options in the area.
