Whitianga is a town on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the Waikato Region of New Zealand's North Island. Discover out-of-the-way places like Matarangi Beach and Otama Beach. We've included these beaches for you: Opoutere Surf Beach and Whangamata Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Whitianga side-trips: Hahei (Cathedral Cove Walk & Hahei Beach Walk). Get some historical perspective at St. Faith's Anglican Church and Whakarewarewa - The Living Maori Village. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at River Rafting & Tubing and Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Change things up with a short trip to Huka Falls tracks in Taupo (about 1h 20 min away). There's much more to do: witness a stunning natural landmark at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, identify plant and animal life at Redwoods Treewalk, take a pleasant ride with a tour on horseback, and explore the fascinating underground world of Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park.

Drive from Whitianga to Rotorua in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and bus. In January, plan for daily highs up to 27°C, and evening lows to 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Sat) early enough to travel to Wellington.

Traveling from Rotorua in February, you will find days in Wellington are slightly colder (24°C), and nights are about the same (17°C). Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 6th (Tue) to allow enough time to travel to Dunedin.
